Practical Evaluations

NCMG Process Updates

The National Certified Master Groomer (NCMG) and Coat Type in-person practical evaluation process has recently been updated to improve efficiency, consistency, and participant communication.

We are evolving our approach to create a more unified, transparent, and professional grooming education experience. These updates are meant to ensure alignment across all AKC and NDGAA standards.

We’re excited to share the process and qualifications for In-Person Evaluations under the AKC Canine College grooming programs.

 What’s Changed

  • Event Announcements: AKC will post approved NCMG and Coat Type in-person practical evaluation events on the NDGAA website, NDGAA Facebook page, and the Groomer Calendar. Individuals enrolled in the NCMG courses or bundle through AKC Canine College will also receive direct notifications regarding upcoming evaluation opportunities.

  • Course Purchase Requirement: Practical evaluation participants must purchase the corresponding in-person practical evaluation course(s) through AKC Canine College prior to their in-person evaluation.

  • Proof of Purchase: Participants must present proof of purchase for the in-person practical evaluation course(s) to their evaluator before completing the practical evaluation. Proof of purchase can include:

    • Physical receipts: Printed sales receipts from a store or service provider.

    • Digital receipts: E-receipts sent via email or as a file, and screenshots of order confirmations from online purchases.

    • Financial statements: Credit card or bank statements that show the date, amount, and vendor of a purchase.

    • Invoices: Documents that detail the cost and nature of a purchase, often used for vendor, contractor, or subscription payments.

    • Order details: An order number or a record of the purchase in a mobile or online account with the retailer.

  • Score Access: Upon completion of the in-person practical evaluation, participants will receive their final score directly through their AKC Canine College account.

  • Participant Portfolios: Participant portfolios within AKC Canine College now allow AKC to monitor individual progress throughout the NCMG certification process. This enhancement ensures that all submitted evaluations and accompanying photos are accurately cataloged for recordkeeping and official review.

What’s Next

  • Regular updates and communications regarding upcoming evaluations and process improvements will be shared on an ongoing basis.
