History

For over five decades, the National Dog Groomers Association of America (NDGAA) has been a trusted leader in advancing professionalism and education within the pet grooming industry. NDGAA has worked to unite groomers worldwide through membership, communication, and recognized grooming standards. With certification opportunities and advocacy for excellence, NDGAA has continually elevated the grooming profession.

The AKC Dog Grooming Institute

The AKC Dog Grooming Institute is designed to assess experienced dog groomers, offering a unique approach to credentialing. AKC DGI does not provide advanced education or a curriculum; instead, it evaluates grooming proficiency and competency at several levels. This rigorous assessment framework ensures groomers meet industry-leading standards of excellence.

AKC Certifications and Credentialing

  1. AKC S.A.F.E.:

    • Focus: Safety in the salon for groomers, mobile units, and salons.

    • Format: Online course with renewal required every two years.

  2. Professional Grooming Credential Exam (AKC – PGC):

    • Focus: Comprehensive knowledge of industry standards and grooming competencies.

    • Renewal: Every five years.

  3. AKC Coat Type Certification (AKC – CT):

    • Focus: Technical proficiency in handling various coat types.

    • Format: Practical virtual or in-person testing with an 80% passing score.

  4. National Certified Master Groomer® (NCMG):

    • Focus: Breed-specific grooming skills and knowledge.

    • Requirements: Attendance at an 8-hour approved workshop or equivalent, with an 85% average passing score across all tests.

  5. AKC Master Groomer (AKC – MG):

    • Focus: Achieved by completing both AKC-CT and NCMG certifications.

    • Requirements: Earn 2 CEUs annually and maintain an active AKC S.A.F.E. Certificate.
